5 Prayers for Battling Depression

According to W.H.O, 5% of adults worldwide suffer from depression. Approximately 280 million people on the earth have some form of it, and suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds. From the statistics, we can safely say that depression is a disease that is rooted deep in our society.

As Christians, we are not immune to sadness. It’s not abnormal to feel very sad or depressed when bad things happen in our lives. We can be depressed when we lose someone or our lives look very bleak. It’s natural to respond to those situations with grief and misery.

However, it becomes harder when our gloom becomes a lifestyle. It’s not easy to battle depression, but we have an advantage as Christians; Jesus. With faith comes power in the name of Jesus. We can call upon Him and He will calm our storms. He understands what we go through, and is more than willing to help us when we ask Him in prayer.

Here are five prayers for depression you can get started with;

A Prayer When You Feel Hopelessly Depressed

Beloved Lord Jesus, listen to my heart that cries out in anguish and the mind that torments me with thoughts that I no longer want to have anymore, that make me feel sick even though I am healthy and succumb to the worst feelings of anguish and hopelessness. I do everything possible to appear to be well, but you who know me, know that this is not true, that my life is a torment at the moment, that nothing gives me joy or motivation. I don’t want this anymore Lord. I need you! It hurts me to see that, because of me, the people I love the most also suffer. I want to give them strength and happiness. I want to learn to enjoy life, to learn that, even if there are problems, they will pass, and that I can overcome anything if I put my mind to it and have a better attitude, but for that, I need you to give me the strength. Free me from this depression and this sadness that disturbs my whole life, takes me away from my family and my dreams, and leads me down a path full of loneliness and bitterness. Lord Jesus, I open the doors of my heart for you to enter it and renew me completely. Increase my faith and I can feel the certainty that everything is fine and nothing can disturb me if you are in me. Lord, send me your Holy Spirit to take over my whole being and give me the strength and enthusiasm to continue living and praising you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Prayer For When Things Seem Dark

Heavenly Father, You alone are my secret keeper and know the darkest places within my heart. Lord, I am in the pit of depression. I feel tired, overwhelmed, and unworthy of Your love. Help me to truly surrender the things that keep me imprisoned inside my heart. Replace my struggle with Your joy. I want my joy back. I want to stand beside You and celebrate this life that You have paid so dearly to give me. Thank you, Lord. You truly are the greatest gift of all. Consume me in Your joy, for I believe that the Joy of You Father, is where my strength is found. Thank You, Lord.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

A Prayer For When You Feel Alone

Father, Today it seems like I’m all alone in this world. Stay with me, Lord, because it is necessary that you’re here so I don’t forget you. You know how easily I leave you. Help me to remember you never leave. Stay with me, Lord, because I’m weak and I need your strength not to fall so often. Stay with me, Lord, because you are my life, and without you, I have no fervor. Stay with me, Lord, because you are my light, and without you, I’m in darkness. Stay with me, Lord, so I can hear your voice and follow you. Stay with me, Lord, because I want to love you much and always be in your company. Stay with me, Lord, because as poor as my soul is I want it to be a place of comfort for You, a nest of love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Prayer For Your Depressed Loved Ones

We come to You today Lord with hearts, minds, and spirits that may be struggling to keep their heads above water. We ask in Your Name that You give them a refuge, a glimmer of hope, and a life-saving Word of Truth. We don’t know every circumstance or situation they are facing, but Heavenly Father You know. We cling to You with hope, faith, and assurance that You can heal our hurt places and pull us from the dark waters of depression and despair. We ask in Your Name that You will allow those who need help, to reach out to a friend, family member, pastor, counselor, or doctor. We ask You to release the pride that may keep them from asking for help. May we all find our rest, strength, and sanctuary in You. Thank You for setting us free and giving us the glimmer of hope in living an abundantly full life in Christ. Amen.

Prayer For Your Child Struggling with Depression

Gracious Father, You are trustworthy, and yet I forget that. Too often I try to work out every situation in my own thoughts without once acknowledging You. Give me the right words to help my child. Give me a heart of love and patience. Use me to remind them that You are with them, You will be their God, and You will strengthen them. Remind me You will uphold them, You will be their help. Please be my help today. Be my strength today. Remind me that You have promised to love me and my children eternally and that You will never leave us. Please let me rest and trust in You, and help me teach my kids the same. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Final Thoughts

God wants us to be happy. He has given us joy as an inheritance but the devil tries to take that away from us. When you’re struggling with depression, it helps to focus on the good things going on in your life and become thankful to God about them.

Remember, God doesn’t judge us for living depressed and He doesn’t criticize our lack of faith. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that we have a High Priest who is empathetic towards our plights because He has been through it all before. He is the God of our emotions and the joy that He gives will strengthen us.

Most importantly, don’t stay silent! Seek help from your family, friends, local counselor, a therapist or a professional. He can also heal us through vessels.
